Let’s hear their journey in their words!
1. Please Describe Malcolm and Denise M. Johnson:
Answer: We are a married couple from Chicago who are passionate about sharing our talents with the world and educating children before they reach school age.
2. Please Describe your business:
Answer: We feature characters designed after our own children and our first book Lotus and Lily Go to the Park, features bright colours to lure in children ages 2 to 5 years old. We used repetition also to make our book more attractive to beginning readers and introduce sight words. Our new business is Johnson Jr. Family Books, where we are going to feature books that we self-illustrate and publish, as well as promote other published artists through our growing social media business pages.
3. What inspired to pursue your passion?
Answer: Our children inspired the concept of starting a children’s series. Originally we were just going to do a book together, but the concept became much bigger, We weren’t seeing many books on shelves with characters that feature our children’s complexions. We wanted to build their confidence and portray the world the way we see it and live, not perfect but a family full of love. We want to make a movement and build our brand together. In a way, this celebrate our marriages
4. What are the difficulties you faced and how did you overcome?
Answer: Doing our first book 100% by ourselves has been hard. We used unconventional methods to transfer the illustrations to the computer for colouring and editing through the Paint program. Each image took over an hour to complete. We didn’t know anything about copyrighting, illustration software, or formatting. It was our first time using Amazon to self-publish and create an eBook as well. Also, we created our own website and business cards, and do much of promoting ourselves. Expanding our brand has been quite a challenge but we stay positive, know when to take a break and work on our goals daily.
5. Your message to the audience/beginners?
Answer: We want parents and those with young children in their lives to understanding that learning starts at an early age. Children learn songs from the radio early, so why not expose them to new words and books? Also, we want everyone to know that they can build their own brand and will be happier doing so.
6. Where can the people find you?
Answer: We are supporting published authors and building our brand on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We also love shares and retweets!
